omg... Thank you so much... you have no idea... I am going to do this FIRST THING tomorrow!

I bought my DS Lite when they came out, with money I got from taking care of my grandmother, after I watched her pass away from cancer. I said to myself "I will buy myself something VERY nice..." I got myself a DS Lite... MY VERY FIRST new system (not a hand-me-down or used system) I treated it like a gem... I even bought a Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Skin for it... it was simply awesome... When we were on vacation... the L/R buttons died... I tried to open it and fix it, but nothing...

Desperate...I purchased a refurbished DS Lite from the Nintendo Store... With a 2-year warranty, came home and I sold my original DS Lite with the skin still on... This broke my heart since my original meant so much to me... Then... guess what... Now, this one.... the L/R buttons died... I couldn't BELIEVE it and especially because I do not play my DS so heavily, every once in a while I will get into it, or I pull it out when I am trying to kill time (Otherwise just whip out my PSP) and today (Christmas day) I just got Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days... and L/R buttons are pretty necessary... So I looked for a solution and stumbled upon this, so thank you VERY much and I promise to do this first thing tomorrow... This... means alot to me <3

Those are great examples! Thanks! I did play Anachronox, but it was a long time ago, so I'd forgotten about the elements of that game. The Grim Fandango implementation sounds like a great idea, too, that doesn't break immersion.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on collection. It's an element of play that I've not given much thought to from a design-perspective (always kinda dismissed it as filler), but—being honest—have spent quite a bit of time pursuing as a player.

I can think of a few examples of "some in-game way of 'sensing' nearby elements of a collection".

In No More Heroes, buried caches of money are shown as yellow dots on the minimap, and the controller shudders slightly when the player character walks over them.

In Far Cry 2, a hand-held detector beeps with higher frequency as the player character approaches hidden/lost briefcases full of diamonds ("getting warmer" just like in No Country for Old Men).

The player has the option of finding and photographing red Bipidri creatures in Anachronox; these creatures sing a particular song that can be heard when they're nearby.

(The next examples are perhaps less relevant than the first few since the collectibles are required to progress, but I'll mention them anyway.) The player character in Grim Fandango turns to look at nearby usable/collectible objects. In Telltale Games' Sam & Max, Sam, player character, can ask Max for hints. These hints sometimes suggest certain kinds of items to look for, while not breaking the fourth-wall and speaking to the player directly.

Thanks man, I was pissed when my R suddenly stopped working in Mortal Kombat on Shao Khan on my 8 months old DSi. :(

So yeah, this was the solution. Works on DSi as well.

Thank you.
